Why And How Alcohol Negates The Exercise Habit

If you belong to the section of people who exercise but end up drinking beer or any other kind of alcohol, then this blog should help you decide on which of the two is more important.
I have come across people who have a decent exercise habit, but somehow they tend to fall into the trap of binge drinking at least once a week. Mind you a couple of years ago I was in the same category and hence I’m talking from experience here.
Some things will change if you realise how Alcohol tends to negate the effect of regular exercise -
Slow the recovery process: More often than not I have mentioned that working out in the gym will work the muscles and the only time it will recover is while we log in our 7-8 hours of sleep in the night.
Therefore if you catch up with buddies post your workout over drinks, then it only helps in stalling the recovery process. Alcohol in the system depletes the Carbs which help in muscle recovery and eventually more of this, will lead to injuries in the gym.
Therefore you do not want to put yourself in this space and then blame the gym or the trainers for the injuries you are nursing.
Disrupts sleep:   Alcohol tends to skew your sleep cycle, which is critical even if you are not a regular exercise person. Disrupting the sleep cycle has been proven time & again to reduce your human growth hormone output—which builds muscle—by as much as 70 percent.
I’m sure you do not want to blow away all the good brownie points accumulated in the gym, by lack of judgement. The runners high or for the matter of fact the lifter’s high is far more satisfying and there are absolutely no side effects.
Packs on fat: When you are overloading yourself with Alcohol, the body fights to make a decision. Most of the time it will work on breaking the alcohol, rather than the fat and the excess carbs in your system.
This will eventually lead to a lot more fat deposits in the glutes and thigh area, which will take a lot of hard work to burn. Have you not realised that it is that much more easier to put on pounds than burning it off.
Depletes water & nutrients:  I am sure you are aware that your washroom visits increase drastically with more Alcohol. Well the truth is that more visits to the washroom will also deplete the nutrients in your system.
This will directly impact your endurance performance if you are planning a big workout or a run the next day.You might not want to flush all the good nutrients from your system and see it literally going down the drain.
Therefore what is the best alternative to socialising and not lose out on the effects of working out? Well like me, you can either sit in some of the best bars with a plain soda & dash of lemon barley or even better with clear plain water.
I still enjoy the company of friends and acquaintances with these changes and also ensure that I do not throw away the hard earned lifestyle changes obtained from the gym over the years. It is actually cool to sit in a Resto bar with a glass of ice water.
The reason behind this Blog is not only to highlight a healthy lifestyle but also to touch upon the current fad of leading an unhealthy lifestyle with both men & women and getting addicted to substance abuse.
I hope that through these thoughts of mine you would have realised the effect that Alcohol can have with people who are hitting the gym more than regularly.
It is also for those who do not work out but are more regular with the alcohol scene.By the way Alcohol is the most abused substance in the world and has far more worse consequence than all drugs put together is what an article caught my eye while posting this.
As usual I would love to hear from you about my thoughts. You can reach me on my mail Id coach@satishrao.in or at my Face book fan page.

Work On A Productive Overdrive

Do you often feel overworked, overwhelmed and overloaded? Most of the people who are not able to manage their time and personal productivity, go through this learning curve. With Multitasking being the new buzzword, this is bound to get worse.
I have been receiving calls and emails from people, on this particular challenge more than anything else  off late.People who are extremely productive and manage their time well are no different than most of us.The only key area they focus on is doing things better. Over the years working with people as their personal Life & Wellness Coach  has made me realize “that being productive is a state of mind” and like everything else, it can be learnt through a step by step process. These are -
Look at less, not more: When I state these words during my coaching calls, I am at most times not understood clearly. Well there is nothing more simple than prioritizing and this is where most of the people slip up.Even today I make it a point to collect my thoughts and write them down, to ensure that I know my priorities clearly at the beginning of every day.
What this does is that, it gives the brain a sense of direction and a path to follow.Once I am clear in my head as to which are the most important things I can work towards it.This no doubt, over the years played a big role in making me more productive.
Measure your own work: Unfortunately most of the people, tend to compare themselves with people around them. This gives rise to a false notion and does nothing but increase the anxiety level.Look at working to your strengths and see what is the best possible effort you can give in the present situation.Be realistic and practical and over a period of time you will know when to step up.
Be disciplined: When it comes to being more productive, nothing can happen if there is no sense of discipline. This is one of the most important traits to develop, if you want to go places.Even though it has been years since I have worked for someone I always make it a point to log in and log out at the same time of the day. Being disciplined over the years, has also positively influenced the other core areas of my life, which feeds on each other.
Work from home: As mentioned before in my Blogs I work from home, even though my office is just a floor away. By doing this I make use of the non commute time to the best of my ability.Working from home can be utilised to focus on the core things you always wanted to do, but was not possible @ work due to so many distractions.
Many clients of mine work a couple of times a week from home and make use of this time amazingly well to be more productive. In fact some of the people whom I know, look at the days they plan to work from home as their most productive days of the week.
Don’t make excuses: One of the traits I have come across with super productive people is that they never make excuses. They see creativity as the result of their effort, not inspirations. The keep moving forward irrespective of any setbacks & learn as they forge ahead.Super productive people are never born with these above mentioned traits, but over the years have developed them.
It is never too late to begin on this incredible journey of being super productive be it at home, work or even in your social setup. Being productive brings in a sense of purpose and satisfaction at the end of the day.Every day of mine is filled with so much purpose, that it would have never been possible, if I had not worked on the above mentioned steps on myself, over the last couple of years.
As always I would love to hear from you on being more productive at my mail Id coach@satishrao.in or on my Face book Fan Page.As always do share & Like this if you have found some value and feel others can benefit from the effort

Bring The Workout To You

Do you belong to the group of people who work 40 + hours every week? Do you  feel you can catch up on being healthy at a later stage, once you settle down?  Well do not be surprised –  you belong to the vast majority of overworked and stressed out people who think that way.
Unfortunately over the years, this trend seems to have increased dramatically in a country like India, where work life balance was an unheard of concept in most organisations.Working as a Life & Wellness Coach with this generation, has given me a deep insight about how to break this pattern and help my clients inculcate healthy habits.
With the present situation it is next to impossible to expect your Boss to leave an Annual Gym membership on your table. However by working smart, you can unchain yourself from the work table and begin to be healthier. In the process you will work towards managing stress better.
Some of the things which each one of you can do to begin, irrespective of your job role or position are detailed below -
Your phone is your best buddy: On an average a working person spends at the least a couple of hours on the phone. Even if for half this time you can manage to stand up or walk around, you will log in some precious exercise  to your daily log.It might not sound much, but you will be surprised as to how much of a difference this small shift can do to your body in the long run.
Once you are conscious about this, then you can move into other areas more diligently.I was jazzed when i realised that I can actually be on my feet for 3-4 hours everyday by just doing this one small shift in my habit.
Follow the 40 minute rule: One rule which I had stuck by when I was chained to the office chair like most of you, was to ensure that I got up from my chair and moved around to another area within the organisation. This keeps the blood moving and helps in kick-starting the metabolism.
The more you tend to sit, the greater will be the drop in your metabolism. Therefore be innovative as there are more than enough excuses within any job Spec which you can encash upon, to walk around. I have seen some of my own clients who have become more social by this one awesome habit.
Cross the cube border: With an open office culture the norm today, it is that much easier to walk up to your co-worker and speak to him/her directly rather than shooting out a mail or texting. Remember that even if you do this a couple of times a day it is better than just sitting on your office chair & shooting mails.
Most people feel lonely and they would more than welcome you, if you can meet them in person. I remember walking a couple of floors or even blocks to speak to my co-worker in person. This has made a huge difference to the outcome on the whole, because it gives  a personal touch to the whole communication.
Make use of the lunch hour: Most of the organisations have at least an hour of break time. This according to me is the most underutilised time of the day for exercise. If you can be a bit more smart about your scheduling, then you can squeeze in a 20 minute time slot to go for a quick walk around the office complex.
I have always done this and some of the biggest insights @ work have always happened to me at this time. Even if there is no opportunity to walk out of the complex, make use of the stairs and ensure you do this a couple of times, before you head back to the office chair.  By the way stair climbing is one of the most effective exercises for fat burn.
If the threat of bulging waistline is not enough to unchain you from your office desk, then  i am  sure that you are not aware, that a sedentary desk job is the number one reason for major health problems both Physically &  Emotionally  down the road.
If these simple shifts  are not possible, then i am not sure what else can work. See what works and do not end here. Be more creative and aspire to make the best use of your work hours to be more healthier & Awesome. Most of us spend the maximum amount of time @ work and if you can use some ingenuity, you can derive the maximum from it.
As always I will look forward to hear from you on these thoughts. Do feel free to reach out to me at my mail ID coach@satishrao.in or on my Facebook fan page.

What Doesn’t Kill You, Makes You Stronger

A Crisis will hit you when you least expect it. Can one be prepared to handle any crisis and come out stronger?
If you are following the cyclone phailin, which hit the Indian East Coast a couple of days ago, it will tell you that any crisis irrespective of the magnitude, can be overcome and used as an opportunity to grow and become stronger.
A Crisis can either make or break us. How you manage the whole cycle will eventually make you a better person, at least at the emotional level. If you look for an opportunity to grow, then even the worst crisis will have some insights and learnings. Some of the things you can do on a proactive note to be battle ready for any crisis are -
Look Inwards for answers: Most of the answers are within each one of us and at times we forget this. When dealing with a crisis the first step needed is to ask yourself for answers and introspect. What this does is  open up possibilities and help you lead a more meaningful life. You need to figure out your own path rather than just following someone’s footsteps.
Life coaching works on this principle and always helps the client figure out the best possible solutions from within. Hence it is very effective and long lasting.
Clear the weeds: When faced with a crisis most of us are conditioned to become more pessimistic & cynical. The least you can do when this happens is to, step back and look at the whole situation through a different perspective – one that is more considerate and which eventually allows you to find a constructive way of handling the difficulty.
This will take some effort but mind you every empowering habit needs a big push from the inside.Over a period of time you do tend to switch to this mode when faced with Believe me it does give an entirely new vision to see through.
Allow yourself to accept, experience, and express your emotions: Once you give yourself permission to do these three critical things, then the Emotional baggage you have been carrying around will be reduce drastically.
When I was face to face with a technical crisis a couple of months ago, I did these things and began to swiftly move towards figuring out an alternate  solution, rather than be stuck in the victim syndrome.
Remember that I am completely dependant on technology and even a couple of minutes of outages will result in my work coming to an abrupt halt.
Do not isolate yourself: Most of the time the cardinal mistake that people make, is to move towards isolation. This might give you some respite in the short run, but plays havoc in your long term “Emotional wellbeing”.
If finding people with genuine interest in your well being is a herculean task, then reach out to Life Coaches like me and quickly move towards building the bridges.Do whatever it takes but do not isolate yourself.
Build on your social circle: With technology becoming our best friend, we tend to forget that human interaction can never be replaced. With more than enough research on social networking (actual friends) highlighting the fact that it can help people tide over a crisis,  it is imperative that you begin to mix with people in real, who share your interests.
Just a couple of hours of interaction in a week, has brought about significant shifts in many of my clients over the years. See what suits you and begin to move in this direction.
Believe in your Emotional Flexibility:  Even if you have the practical ability & skills to tide over a crisis, you are bound to falter if you do not believe in this one thing and work towards it diligently.Having faith in your own ability to cope with any situation, will not only put you in a better position but also help you be more practical and dogmatic.
It is just like a tree withstanding strong winds by being flexible. In the same way your Emotional quotient, will become stronger when you give it more opportunity to be flexible.Chances of injury is drastically minimized when one is supple and flexible.
Working on these steps, will not ensure that you will be able to walk through any difficulty that you will face, but it  will make you more resilient and help you weather the storm.I have come across many people who have gone through a major crisis but have come out better, by working on some of the areas mentioned above.
These journey of people like you & me inspires me so much to put my thoughts in words, for some of you to build on in your own life’s journey.I will look forward to hear from you all, in terms of How you do relate to things around you when crises does hit you hard.Do you become more stronger or cave in to the pressure?
Do share your thoughts on my mail Id coach@satishrao.in or Facebook Fan page.I will so look forward to hear from you and know about your experiences.

Simple Truth About Exercise

Everyone knows that regular exercise is good not only from a physical standpoint but also from an emotional level. However somewhere in the journey called life, we tend to ignore this. Are you guilty of walking the same path ? Well read on to How to avoid falling into this common trap and losing the battle in the mind.
The biggest takeaway for anyone who is disciplined and successful in the gym, will be your life outside it.Working on a long term exercise regimen will bring out the best in you just like it has helped me tap into some my biggest strengths.
Most of the people I come across have big plans in terms of supplements, equipments in gym, instructors and other trivial things, which are not the most  important. Focus on the simple concepts given below and in no time you will begin to see some amazing results.
Commit for the long term: Some of the biggest decisions you make are always for the long term. One should look at exercise as a long term habit, for a positive change in your lifestyle. I always advocate that short term goals will give rise to short spurts of motivation.
However when you expand your vision and see how you would like to take control of your health, in the long term the view drastically changes. Also when you commit to being consistent over the long-term, you end up seeing remarkable results in the short-term.This helps you supplement the vision.
Schedule this in your day: When we know what exactly we need to do, then the commitment level increases many folds. Setting a schedule for your workouts will help you get more organised and help you work your way around it. I have seen so many people in the gym over the years who miss a couple of workouts and are never seen again.
Let’s face it, emergencies come to all of us but with a proper schedule, you can comfortably sail through.
I always ensure that my evening post 1800 hrs is scheduled for my workouts and rarely fit in anything, else unless it is important. However I have scheduled only 4 days in a week for my workouts and have been consistent, because I know i am not over committing. Somewhere down the line I feel that your schedule should govern your actions & not the other way around.
Aim for slow progress: Most of the people get stuck in this one area more than any other. They look for immediate progress and feel that losing weight or building muscle is a couple of days of work in the gym. Well you can’t be more wrong than this.
It requires a sustained effort, over a period of time. There will always be a time where your body gets adjusted to your workouts and will stop progressing. It is imperative that you focus on slow progress and not get derailed on the way. See what suits you and begin small. There is an immense magic in small actions which will add up to massive changes.
Maintain a record: Keeping a journal is one of the most efficient ways to ensure that you can always go back and find clues for your improvement. It need not be an elaborate affair. It could be  just a simple spreadsheet, which will do the job of keeping you on top of things.
If required you can always share it with someone, who can give you a honest opinion. I will be glad to look at some of your journals & updates if you have one. Do reach out to me and I will see if you are on the right track to the best of my ability. The biggest takeaway from this simple exercise is that what gets measured gets managed.
Working on these simple strategies will not require each one of you to change your lifestyle completely. It needs a shift from the inside, which will eventually make you do the things you always wanted.Once you begin to work on these points you will be astonished with the results you will be see. Will look forward to hearing from you on my mail Id coach@satishrao.in  or at my Face book Fan page .

How Not To Let Fear Run You

How would your life be if fear was only a word you knew about in the dictionary? Well fear of failure is probably the highest reason which stops most people from living their dream.
You can find some solace  to know that I too went through this phase, when I allowed fear to override my thought process.
As most of you know by now, a couple of years ago i was very much the corporate types “living paycheck to paycheck” and you guessed it, the one thing which stopped me from becoming what I am right now  was “FEAR”.
I had to do something drastic from within, to overcome it and live the life I always wanted. Given below are some of the things which you could implement in your respective journey  to eliminate fear -
Fearlessness is just like a muscle: The best metaphor I can think of fear & relate to it  is, as a muscle in the human body. Each one of us can work towards overcoming fear by only working on it.
The more you tend to exercise the muscle, the stronger it gets. The Same logic will work with being absolutely fearless in the journey of Life.
Change your vision of your world: It is extremely important to see the world the way you want it to be. The more you see yourself in the mind’s eye, doing the things you always wanted to do, the body will respond more often than not.
I always advocate some time everyday to enhance one’s vision to overcome the areas of fear, in your life. For those of you who cannot see things vividly in the future, do not worry.
Try writing down the areas of your life where you need change & be fearless  and within no time, these will be conceptualized as images in your mind.
Be clear in your communications: Most of the people who harbor some kind of fear in them are not very clear about their wants. This automatically translates into the language being used and in turn affects your internal communication.
The easiest thing each one of you can do to set this right  is to practice being more clear in your communication. I know that being exactly clear in what you do want, might be overwhelming to most of you, but over a period of time it tends to become more of a habit.
What at times was an effort will eventually become a regular thought process.
Do not overspend risk proofing a situation:  Most of the things around us are beyond our control and the more we think of it, the more stress we tend to accumulate.Once you are in acceptance of this fact, the closer you will be towards fearlessness.
When I became a Life & Wellness Coach, I realized this pretty early and focused more on the task in hand. This played a vital part in my own progress.
Asking yourself this question, when faced with a situation will always give you some amazing insights on what can be prevented and what is in your hand. Work on this instinct and it will play a vital role for you in the years to come.
Do one thing everyday which scares you: We come across so many situations in our daily life, which we ignore because we are scared to face it. We can get good at this by only doing small things which scare us.
It can be as simple as walking up to the person, in the office and connecting with him/her. What this does is, it gives you a clear road-map for the future in differentiating between, what scares you and what is dangerous for you.
Once you begin to overcome small fears in your mind, you can work towards bigger ones. As always, I believe that consistency and focus will help you get there in no time.
There is no magic here  but pure inertia which takes you there. Some  of my clients do say that i make it sound so easy.Deep down I believe that “it always is”.
Working towards fearlessness, is an empowering habit which each one of you can develop by working on it. There is no other way to perfect this, other than getting into the arena and getting one’s hand dirty.
Pick and choose what suits you and begin in a small way. I will guarantee you that in no time you will see drastic improvements.
I hope that I could tap into an area which was always bothering you. As always I would love to hear from you in terms of how much of an impact these words & thoughts  had on you, at my mail id coach@satishrao.in or at my Facebook fan page

Eat Healthy To Strengthen Your Emotional Muscle.

Are you aware that eating 5-6 servings of fruits & vegetables in a day will help in altering the mood of an individually drastically? I have seen an amazing transformation of the emotional thought process with me and my own  clients over the years who  have followed this.
Over the years we have been bombarded with information that to be healthy one needs to eat the recommended quantity of fruits & vegetables.
The quantity is not gargantuan as many do perceive to be but as little as your fist size 5-6 times a day. If you are clear with respect to what is that you want, then you will figure out ways and means in your busy schedule to stick to the recommended quantity.
When the benefits are obvious the only person in my opinion who is stopping each one of you from getting there is yourself.
Some of the most common roadblocks one faces when they do begin to increase the intake are many and I have touched upon a few which will help you get onto the healthy highway in no time -
Consider mostly fresh fruits & vegetables: With lack of time and resources most of the people I come across in my line of work think that eating cut fruits is as healthy, since it saves time & energy.
Well unfortunately most of the nutrients are oxidised when exposed to nature. Working on eating more fresh fruits calls for ingenuity and a little bit of effort no doubt.
Look at carrying fruits & vegetables which can be carried as a whole and eaten in between your meetings, breaks or even when hunger pangs hit you without much of a fuss.
Smoothies are the way to go forward: The easiest thing one can do to ensure a good healthy dose is using a blender and working on a smoothie. The Only thing is to ensure not to add any artificial sweetener or sugar which negates the effect of the whole effort.
You can be extremely innovative here and mix and match according to your own convenience and budget. I remember carrying two airtight tubes of these religiously, to work on a regular basis for many years.
Dry fruits are a good alternative: During our high altitude journeys, the one thing we all carried was dry fruits. This actually kept my friends and me going for many days when we were completely cut out of civilization.
One handful of Almonds, walnuts, raisins, flax seed and lemon seed will ensure that the required quantity of fibre will go in to your system.
The biggest advantage of dry fruits is that they do not spoil immediately and you can rest assured that you will find small boxes in my car, gym kit and locker.
Boiled is also an option: Some of the vegetables and fruits increase their nutrient value, when cooked or boiled. For those of you who are averse to eating anything raw, then boiling some specific vegetables and fruits is the way to go forward.
I have figured out that eating boiled peanuts with chopped fresh onions & coriander is far better than eating it raw. So whenever there is an opportunity I always ensure that I dig into this combination.
See what suits you and of course do your own research to ensure that what you are consuming helps you in the long run and not just act as a filler. There are more than enough combination to suit each one of your taste, preference and budget.
With these above options I am sure that you will eventually figure out a combination which suits you and begin consuming naturally available medicines for your system.
In my opinion the biggest benefit to any person is “it begins to alter your thought process, which will eventually completely alter your life”. It cannot get more natural than this and some of the shifts which I have seen within me and my clients are at times surreal.
As always do work on small changes and in no time you will be enjoying the immediate benefits of a natural concoction of nutrients flooding through your bloodstream.

Get Your Positive Gears Turning?

If you thought that being an optimist was ingrained in our genes, you can’t be more wrong. Having an optimistic mindset, can make one improve drastically in a very short period of time and the pure energy one radiates, will be enough to influence circumstances and people.
Being positive & optimistic has more advantages than any other trait and it is a choice which most of us can take. Developing an optimistic mindset is easier said than done.
Some of the areas which I would like to touch upon going forward will be a good beginning for just about anybody.
Forgive & move on: Forgiving someone is something which I always tell is in our absolute control. We need to en-cash on this, one empowering habit and it does more good to you than the other person.
Remember that having resentment & envy drains you out of precious energy and worse will attract similar thoughts and actions. The easiest thing you can do is to make peace with the past and ensure it does not spoil your present & eventually jeopardize your future.
Do whatever it takes at the conscious & the sub-conscious level to close the chapter and move on. I will guarantee you that, you will be a different person by just planting this seed in your mind from today.
Pay it forward: Share your life’s journey with people around you. When we share our successes & failures in life we are giving others around us tools that they can build on, evolve & persevere.
Over the years I have never shied away from talking about my own stories. I have seen that it helps to build hope in people and according to me “Hope is the glue” which helps in binding the optimism & positive energy within each one of us.
Develop listening skills: Some of the best communicators and positive people around us are great in listening. Well that is one of the key traits of working towards a positive & optimistic mindset.
By sharpening your listening skills, you are demonstrating confidence & respect to others which is proof that you are absolutely in control of yourself.
Over the years I have worked to develop this which is critical for somebody in a profession like me. This has helped me immensely over the years.
Channelize energy: When we allow ourselves to have jealousy & envy we are doing more harm than good to ourselves. Work towards channelizing that particular energy to empower yourself.
Develop a mindset to consider other people successes to work as a catalyst to help you achieve yours. Begin small and in no time you will be working at the subconscious level and doing these just like batting an eyelid.
Remember that once you condition your own mind to pick this approach, then it is just a matter of time before you even think of  doing this.
Be a positive forward thinker: When you begin to see things in the future in a positive way the mind has the ability to consider it as a cue and help you move towards it.
Once you do have the bigger picture in place, then small obstacles and irritants will not matter anymore. You will begin to develop a habit of seeing the forest for the trees.
Just like any muscle in the body which becomes stronger so does this particular neural pathway in your own mind. The more you exercise this, the stronger it does get.
Working towards being more positive & eventually an optimistic person is not a difficult journey. As with any journey this has to first begin in the mind and that is what I exactly do as a Life & Wellness Coach.
I work with people in “redesigning their lives” and in most cases it happens at the sub conscious level, which I always say is our own operating system.
Regular updates will help each one of us to be on top of things and I am sure the above pointers will help you to at the least  begin on the right note.
As always I would love to hear from you on this Blog article. Will look forward to hearing from you on my mail Id  coach@satishrao.in or on my Facebook Fan Page.
